The cryptocurrency industry is escalating its political influence with a $1.5 million campaign against Texas Representative Al Green. Protect Progress, an affiliate of crypto super PAC Fairshake, aims to unseat the longtime Democrat in next month's primary election. Green's opposition to key crypto legislation has made him a target for an industry now flexing its financial muscle in electoral politics.

Christian Menefee, Green's primary challenger, has emerged as the crypto industry's preferred candidate. The Harris County Attorney supports blockchain applications in government and holds a "strongly supports crypto" rating from advocacy group Stand With Crypto. This race exemplifies the industry's strategy of backing favorable candidates while opposing detractors.

The $1.5 million expenditure dwarfs Green's entire 2024 campaign war chest of less than $450,000. Fairshake's initial ad buy avoids direct mention of cryptocurrency, instead framing the contest as a generational shift. The super PAC's substantial $193 million reserve signals continued heavy spending in the 2026 midterms.
